 The Online Teaching and Learning certificate is a sixteen credit hour certificate, consisting of four four-credit-hour courses, designed to assist educators in developing and managing quality online courses.

 Course One:

Introduction to Online Teaching and Learningn

Course Description-

n4 credit hours

This course introduces students to the design and delivery of online coursework. Concepts covered include the virtual classroom, synchronous vs. asynchronous learning, use of the web for instruction, virtual community and the uses of the various technology tools. Online courses will be contrasted with on-ground courses with respect to how each serves the needs of given students and current research in online teaching as well as learning will be examined. Students will begin to construct a basic course or course component that they will continue to develop in remaining certificate course work, which will demonstrate their understanding and application of the core concepts in this class.

In this course several teaching models will be presented from highly interactive instruction to independent study.  Models are designed to meet the requirements of different learning situations. Current research on the applications of various teaching models will be examined in relationship to class sizes, learning objectives and technologies. Processes for examining alternatives and criteria for selecting appropriate teaching strategies are central to this course. Students will augment the basic course model developed in the prior class with more detailed information on teaching methods.

Introduction to Online Teaching and Learning

Models for Online Instruction

Course Description-

 4 credit hours

This course examines the ever-growing array of available technology tools for the virtual classroom, including various synchronous, asynchronous, and web-based delivery technologies. Students will focus on learning outcomes for a given class and examine a range of technology tools available to support them. The selection, application and evaluation of several technology tools will be considered, and criteria for selecting the best tools will be suggested. Students will further refine the course model developed in prior classes to apply and demonstrate the considerations for selecting technology tools for the final course design.

Prerequisite(s):

Introduction to Online Teaching and Learning

Models for Online Instruction

Technology Tools for Online Instruction

Course Description-

 4 credit hours

In this course, students will incorporate online teaching skills and concepts into a course design and implementation plan. This project will evaluate the students' online teaching plans with respect to clearly delineated learning outcomes and teaching models. Students will build well-balanced and appropriately sequenced assignments and determine whether the technology tools they have selected will meet the learning objectives of the course being designed.

Current research on curriculum and assessment with particular emphasis on the online paradigm will be provided. Students will complete the final revisions of their course model developed in prior classes
